Some keywords from the poem "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night (By Dylan Thomas:1914-1953)
1. Meteors-noun
meaning: falling star /shooting star
example: she ripped through the sky like a meteor
In stanza 5, the poet uses these lines;
"Grave men can see with "blinding sight,
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay".
Meteors emit light. The use of meteors here by Thomas means that the "grave men" towards their deaths can look back on their lives and see it with extreme clarity. In old age, people often lose their eyesight, but it doesn't mean they can't see their past clearly in their own memories.
GAY
Meaning: bright, happy, vivid, joyful
Example: the children looked chubby and gay
In the second line of the 5th stanza, Dylan Thomas says,
"Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay"
This means that the memories of the grave men "blaze" in their blind eyes; in other words, the joy of a life well lived reflects in their face, despite their old age.
FIERCE
Meanings: Intense, strong, vehement.
Example: a fierce pain shot between his eyes.
"And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray".
In the last stanza of the poem, "fierce tears" is used to show how intense the regret of the narrator's father is about his passing. He is probably shedding those "fierce tears" to show how regretful he is about the things he wished to have done which he could not do. At the thought of not being able to do anything at the moment to save his life, he feels remorseful and regreful. This teaches us that life is short so we should make each day count so that we do not regret later.
